Why is Fable 5 offline?
On June 12, 2026, the US Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security issued an export-control directive ordering Anthropic to suspend foreign access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5, citing national security concerns over a reported jailbreak. Because Anthropic could not verify the citizenship of its users at scale, it disabled both models for every customer worldwide — the first known federally ordered recall of a live frontier AI model. When will it come back?
No restoration date has been announced. Anthropic says it is working to restore access and publicly disputes the directive, calling the jailbreak narrow and widely available from other models. Until the export-control issue is resolved, the models stay offline.
What can I use in the meantime?
